Hope Works, Inc - Girl with BooksThe HopeWorks Personal and Career Development curriculum consists of seven modules:

Who I Am – A discussion of interests, abilities and primary work values

Exploring the World of Work – What questions do I need answered about a career? A discussion of stereotypes related to careers; what causes certain careers to change over time; what limitations relate to certain careers; having “a job” versus “the job;” resources for career exploration; and using the Occupational Outlook Handbook to research 20-30 careers.

Making Good Decisions – Students evaluate and narrow down their career choices with a special emphasis on the following: Does this job exist in Memphis? Does this job make the kind of money I need to make? Do I like the working hours of this job? Am I willing to pursue the education needed for this job? Is this a realistic choice for me?

How to Be a Great Employee – A discussion of what employers want from employees (nationally and locally); work habits with emphasis on attendance and punctuality; conflict resolution and dealing with anger; getting along with bosses; getting along with co-workers; how to start out well on a new job; managing your time on the job; making mistakes on the job; how to advance on the job; handling harassment; and preparing for internships.

How to Find Jobs – A discussion of the traditional method of finding jobs through advertisements, the Internet, agencies (public & private) temporary services; non-traditional methods of finding jobs through networking, the Yellow Pages, volunteer and professional organizations; job search tips; job search checklist; telephone skills; and cover letters.

Application Forms – How to complete the master application form perfectly.

Interviewing – A discussion of appropriate attire, posture, eye contact, handshake, etc.  What are employers looking for? What are some typical questions and difficult questions? A look at how to develop a commercial about yourself.
