Why does passing the HiSET matter?
If you didn’t finish high school, you’re not alone. Nearly 20% of students in Memphis don’t graduate high school. There are a lot of reasons students choose to stop attending school, but those reasons don’t matter when you enter the job market. If you haven’t finished high school, you have a much lower earning potential than someone who did. But there is something you can do to make a difference – pass the HiSET.
What is the HiSET?
The HiSET, or high school equivalency test, is the state-administered exam adults take to earn their high school diploma after they would have graduated high school. It’s the official name for what many people refer to as a GED. The HiSET is offered in several states, including Tennessee, and features reading, writing, math, science and social studies components. Like many other tests, you study and then sit for the exam. You have a high school equivalency certificate if you earn a passing score.
HopeWorks helps hundreds of people in Memphis and Shelby County prepare for the HiSET. We provide subject-specific support to equip you with the information you need to succeed in addition to test-taking strategies. We know what it takes to help a student pass the HiSET.
Why study for the HiSET?
Finishing your education matters. Whether you’ve been out of school for a year or a decade, you can improve your professional outlook, unlock doors to technical or associate degrees, and build a strong life for yourself by passing the HiSET. When we look at the numbers in Tennessee, it’s clear that HiSET completion makes a difference. The most recent census data shows that people without a high school diploma earn an average salary of $32,500 per year while a person who earns a high school diploma or equivalency certificate earns $39,700. If a Tennessean takes their high school equivalency certificate and earns a technical degree, the average salary jumps to $45,000. With just a few months to a few years of schooling and effort, you could increase your earning potential by more than $12,000.
The HiSET is about more than wages.
The self-confidence that comes from completing your education cannot be measured. We find that our students use passing their HiSET as a springboard to pursue new career goals and build the life they want for their future. When you sit for the HiSET, you set an example for your loved ones and invest time in yourself. That investment is guaranteed to pay dividends.
