Adult education in Tennessee
In September (Workforce Development Month), HopeWorks staff attended and participated in the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce’s virtual Adult Education All-Star Week. Topics included developing talent from within the classroom, discussing how industry partners bring value to both employees and employers through workplace education, how pre-apprenticeships can build bridges to employment through hands-on training and best practices for career coaches.
What is adult education?
Two of HopeWorks’ programs were featured and discussed by participants in All-Star Week.
Adult English as a Second Language
We work with non-native English speakers to help improve language comprehension and increase their reading, writing and listening abilities. Our program is designed to help students build confidence in their English language abilities to improve their quality of life, from engaging in meaningful conversations with doctors to discuss symptoms and ailments, to understanding feedback from their children’s teachers regarding academic progress and behavior. We also offer digital literacy classes and training courses for specific job skills.
All English language classes are taught by certified teachers and offered year-round for beginner, intermediate and advanced students.
Workforce training
In addition to AESL courses, we also offer a workforce development program called Employment Essentials, which prepares students to enter the workforce or change careers. We determine students’ unique abilities and suggest jobs that mirror their individual skillsets and share insight into the employment process – from mock interviews and resume-building tips to workplace etiquette and coworker collaboration. Each student receives guidance from our Workforce Development team to make connections with employers and chart the best course of action for their career paths.
