Returning to the classroom as an adult

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”
– Proverbs 19:21

As we grow up, there’s an idea that things are supposed to happen according to a certain schedule. However, we all know things don’t always go as planned. But when one door closes, God opens another – just ask our Adult Basic Education students!

There are many reasons why someone drops out of school: the birth of a child, caring for a loved one, getting a job to provide for family members, etc. As time passes, responsibilities increase, making it harder to return. But at HopeWorks, we believe it’s never too late to go back to school. A high school equivalency diploma can create opportunities for new careers and a higher income, and inspire those around you to follow in your footsteps. One of our recent ABE graduates, Flora Wallace, is a testament to this.

At 74 years young, Flora – or Ms. Flo to her students – enrolled in our ABE program. As an elementary school crossing guard, Flora understands the importance of education, but she, too, has experienced hardships that made her own return to the classroom difficult. In 2019, Flora was hit by a vehicle while helping students cross the street. A broken rib and several stitches later, she returned to her post and serves as an inspiration to students, parents, teachers and community members alike. Now, thanks to her HiSET diploma, Flora can accomplish her dream of becoming a teacher and continue her education at the collegiate level.

Not only can a high school equivalency diploma provide more career opportunities and higher wages, but studies also show it offers health benefits. VCU’s Center on Society and Health reports Americans with more education live longer, healthier lives, experience less stress and develop stronger relationships through interpersonal skills.

There’s no time limit when it comes to bettering yourself. Remember, it’s never too late to learn! If you’re interested in our ABE programming or have any questions, give us a call at 901-272-3700 today.
